Lesson
In the Cayman Islands, there's a place where nearly tame sting rays interact with people every day--they're basically aquatic puppies, begging for food and attention. The experience is so magical each ray is worth over a million dollars for the tourism he or she generates. Yet even such valuable creatures aren't immune to human carelessness (and worse), as evidenced by this poor ray's horrific scar, from a boat propeller. Luckily she survived her ordeal, but not all do. It's an important reminder that nature deserves our attention, protection, and respect.

Swimmingly
Seals are just as curious about you as you are about them--but they'll run circles around you in the water, like this pair did to me in the Galapagos.

Coconut Crazy
A sun bear snags a coconut for an afternoon snack at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center, in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. These adorable creatures face an uncertain future in a world where their forests are shrinking and they are poached for the pet trade. But you can help! Please visit BSBCC.org to find out more. The $5 automatic monthly donation I set up for myself is money well spent.

Pink Fog
This is why you should never be dispirited when the fog rolls in over Shenandoah National Park--sometimes it clears just enough that you get a gorgeous sunset!
